Shaun Patrick Hinen, MD

Shaun Hinen, MD, is a cardiothoracic radiologist working at Prisma Health in Columbia. He was born and raised in South Carolina, now primarily working at the same hospital that he was born in. Having lived and worked across the state from the Upstate to the Midlands to the Low Country, he has seen firsthand the disparity in health within our state and particularly the differences in access to subspecialized care from region to region. The world of cardiothoracic imaging is evolving at a fast rate, and Dr. Hinen is passionate to ensure that his fellow South Carolinians have the best access to this technology as it provides a significant opportunity to improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Hinen started out in chemical engineering at Clemson University, then changed majors, finishing with a degree in biochemistry. He was drawn to diagnostic radiology given its blend of aspects that he enjoyed in both fields. He trained at the Medical University of South Carolina for his medical degree, diagnostic radiology residency and cardiothoracic radiology fellowship. Cardiothoracic imaging stood out as a subspeciality given his interest in heart and lung anatomy/physiology, and he has long held a personal interest in cardiovascular health as he has been an avid runner since a young age. He has a strong background in cardiovascular and thoracic imaging, having worked in the departments of Dr. U.J. Schoepf, who was at the forefront of cardiac imaging, as well as Dr. Philip Costello and Dr. Reginald Munden, nationally and internationally renowned thoracic radiologists.

Along with his passion for clinical work, Dr. Hinen has a love for teaching with years of experience educating medical students, residents and fellows. He is always available and eager to discuss medicine, radiology and beyond.
