Sarah Barnwell Whelchel, MD

Sarah Whelchel, MD, completed her undergraduate degree at Princeton University, where she studied the history of science. She received her medical degree from the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She completed her psychiatry training at Prisma Health (Upstate) in Greenville, SC, and then joined the department here as an attending physician.

Her interests include general adult outpatient psychiatry, integrating psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, the impact of lifestyle changes on mental health, and medical education. She enjoys getting to know every patient as an individual with a unique life story and then using evidence-based medicine to develop a personalized treatment plan.
