Originally from Chapin, South Carolina, Michael Cryer, MD, earned his medical degree at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia. He then completed both an internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Prisma Health in the Midlands. After two more fellowships – interventional cardiology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and structural heart in Tucson, Arizona – he returned to Columbia to practice both general cardiology and interventional cardiology.
Dr. Cryer specializes in catheter-based procedures, including heart stenting for patients having heart attacks or chest pains. He also focuses on structural cardiology, where he can fix heart valves with minimally invasive procedures. He loves cardiology because of the long-term patient/physician relationship. He stays up to date on the latest technology to help his patients get better faster and makes sure they understand the issue and the “whys and hows” of treatment.
Outside of work, he loves spending time with his wife and young children. He takes care of himself by running and working out.

Everything was as respectful and helpful as it could be because I'm elderly and I was very nervous about this appointment and it turned out to be a blessing in my life. And all the people that I was, the young lady that I talked to and I can't remember her name, she was just super. I mean, the doctor didn't have much to do after, you know, after I talked to her, it was like I had known her all my life. She remembered me and I hadn't been there in a year and I couldn't have, you know, it was a very enlightening experience with a doctor's office and it was just wonderful. That's all I can think of. It was a wonderful doctor's appointment. I wouldn't mind having one sooner.

Taking of my blood was an absolute nightmare and maybe you need another person in there as an option to take blood.

It was fine.

This comment applies to all supportive staff. I would like to suggest that they keep their fingernails shortened. I actually got unintendedly jabbed in my leg (now a bruise) with a long nail. The same has happened on my arm when applying the blood pressure cuff. I recall that JCAHO and OSHA have specific guidelines for nails hygiene, length and artificial nails. I am sure Prisma Health has a guideline too. One beautiful set of nails I saw were so long and very pointed.... almost weapons!!

Nothing to add. Very happy with Dr. Cryer!

I have good experience with the practice

It would help if PRISMA would get out of the way so patients could contact the provider directly. I have had issues getting in touch with the actual providers after leaving messages in the complicated maze of Prisma administrative complications. Just my opinion.
- 5 out of 5 starsReviewed on 2/10/2026
The Prisma system of management actually slows down patient/doctor communication. It may be cheaper than doctors having to hire their own admins, but it's frustrating as heck to get things done.

Every thing was excellent. I don't know you could provide better service.

The only problem I had was when they did my medical records, they had it all wrong. I wish the girl had looked at the computer better. They had me taking way too much pain medication. Thank you.

Have more appointments available when there is an emergency to see the doctor that doesn't require going to the emergency room. It takes a long time to get an appointment with your doctor or a doctor that is not scheduled months out and there is no other cardiology available in Newberry.

I didn't see the doctor until 1.5 hours after my appointment. I waited and waited. Don't over book! I understand that there are emergencies. However my appointment was for 9. I arrived at 8:45 and there were 3 others who were called back to the doctor before I was called. Please respect the patient's time. If my appointment is for 9 I should be seen at 9.

I was impressed by the professionalism of the visit. Slight wait to be seen by Dr Cryer but not a problem. Reception had a nice smile and checked me in efficiently. Nurse took me in a few minutes, checked my vital signs and gave me an ECG. Professional. Saw Dr Cryer I asked questions about the Watchman procedure. He answered every question to the point that I am waiting to be scheduled for the procedure. All in all a very positive experience.

Everything went well. Dr. Cryer and his staff were excellent. The young lady who came in first to ease my feelings and inform me and address my concerns was extremely good. Very knowledgeable and had definitely read up on my case history. Extremely competent. My time with Dr. Cryer went extremely well too. Both were very versed on my history and situation. I appreciate both of their competency and professionalism. My time ahead of me will apparently be rather challenging. Fortunately I've gone through and recovered from worse. Additionally the lady's that took my blood were absolutely wonderful. The receptionist and the lady taking blood both were a joy to be around. It's kinda weird to say that I actually enjoyed having blood drawn in both of my arms ?. Simply wonderful women. Both very professional as well.

My Nurse PA (from Texas) was out standing...lots of background...lots of information...answered all my questions...was a joy to be around. Surely one of your "A+" Heart Staffers.

I have been informed more about my health in the last 6 months than in the last twenty years. Great care has been given!
- 4 out of 5 starsReviewed on 7/18/2025
My appointment was supposed to be at eleven but did not see the doctor until twelve. One hour of sitting and waiting. Therefore I felt like I did not matter. The doctor was either overbooked or his time was more valuable than my time. Either way I didn't feel comfortable.
- 5 out of 5 starsReviewed on 7/18/2025
Dr. Cryer and his PA have always been exceptional!! Trust them both implicitly
