John Preston Erwin, III, MD

Dr. Erwin is an internationally acclaimed clinical cardiologist with 30 years of clinical, educational and research experience. He attended college on a Division I football scholarship before medical school at Texas A&M College of Medicine where he graduated with AOA honors. He completed his postgraduate education in internal medicine and cardiology at the Mayo Clinic prior to a 22-year academic practice at Baylor Scott & White Health/Texas A&M College of Medicine. In that tenure, he served as Cardiology Fellowship Director, Associate Dean for CME and Chair of the Department of Medicine and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators. He also served as Chair of Medicine at NorthShore University Hospitals/UChicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Erwin’s research background is in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sports cardiology as well as valvular heart disease and health care delivery science. He is internationally recognized in the fields of sports cardiology, preventative cardiology and valvular heart disease. He has served on the American College of Cardiology writing committee for Valvular Heart Disease since 2014. In 2025, he was recognized among his peers and awarded the Masters of the American College of Cardiology. He has also earned an MBA from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business where he graduated in 2024 as cohort valedictorian with capstone research in health care equity in cancer screening and health care delivery science. Dr. Erwin has great passion at the intersect of industrial engineering and improving clinical efficiency and effectiveness. He has now joined Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville as Department Chair of Medicine.
