Dr. John Sharpe is a sports medicine surgeon in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Prisma Health. Born just outside Philadelphia and raised in rural southern Illinois, he attended Southern Illinois University School of Medicine before completing his residency training with the Columbia USC Prisma Health Orthopedic Surgery Program. He then pursued a sports medicine fellowship in Detroit, gaining hands-on experience with professional and community athletes while training in the most advanced surgical techniques available.
As a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Sharpe is dedicated to helping athletes of all levels from elite competitors to weekend warriors return to play safely and confidently. He utilizes the full spectrum of treatment options, from non operative approaches such as rehabilitation and injections to advanced surgical interventions. His clinical interests include ACL injuries, complex knee conditions, shoulder arthritis, rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, shoulder instability, meniscal injuries, cartilage problems and deformity correction.
Growing up in an active community and having been sidelined by injuries himself, Dr. Sharpe understands the deep personal impact of being unable to do what you love. Whether helping a patient pick up their grandchildren again or return to high level performance, he is passionate about guiding individuals back to an active lifestyle that supports long term wellbeing and quality of life.
Dr. Sharpe empowers patients by helping them fully understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and the broader health factors that influence recovery. He emphasizes nutrition, overall medical wellness, preventive exercise, and a collaborative decision making process to ensure each patient chooses the path that is right for them.
Outside the operating room, Dr. Sharpe prioritizes his family. He and his wife have three children and are currently expecting their fourth. With their kids beginning school in Sumter, the family enjoys an active lifestyle together swimming, walking, biking, going to the gym, playing sports and occasionally golfing.

No recommendations. I had an exceptional visit. Dr Sharpe was AMAZING! He was knowledgeable, empathetic, and very informative. I especially like that fact that surgery wasn't his first treatment option or recommendation.

Make other patients in the waiting room not talk on their cell phones on speaker phone. Just kidding- we love hearing both sides of their conversation, lol.

The only thing that was actually bothering me, I had to wait two hours. That's all. Everything else was good.
- 2 out of 5 starsReviewed on 11/15/2025
I had over a two-hour wait for the provider who then told me he didn't have enough time to study my history enough or my imagery enough to have a great plan and that we should meet in another month.

job well done.

My doctor, besides being over an hour late, seemed distracted and unfocused. While imagery and symptoms indicated a partial tear in a ligament/tendon, he offered no information as to how that was supposed to get repaired. I believe the reason my injury happened in the first place was dismissed, and may continue to worsen or reoccur. At this moment in time I believe I will be pursuing a second opinion.

I don't think anything needs to change. You do a great job with lots of care. The nurses are always nice, and the new Dr. John Sharpe is excellent!

Dr. need to run more on time, so he is not so rushed. I understand they fit me in when they could. I sure appreciate this too. I was asked to come in at 10 am. I did not leave your office till 2:15. I was told Dr. will spend time with me and he was rushed I had to catch him on way out of the door to ask questions and tell him he will spend time with me like other patients. I was told he is getting to know patients and that is why he is backed up. He spent less than 10 minutes with me and never "got to know me." It's now 3 days later and he has not even submitted my prior authorization to my insurance. I am not pleased.

Dr. Sharpe and his whole staff was amazing. Everyone was extremely pleasant. Dr. Sharpe did an amazing job easing my mind about my son's ankle issues. Everything was explained in great detail. I feel confident with the plan in place to help my son's pain to go away. I would recommend Dr. Sharpe and the office to my family and friends. Couldn't have asked for a better visit.
