Alexander James Burnikel, MD

Alexander Burnikel, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult hip and knee reconstruction at Prisma Health Orthopedics in Greenville, South Carolina. A Greenville native, Dr. Burnikel completed his undergraduate studies at Clemson University before earning his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. He went on to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Prisma Health–Upstate, followed by advanced fellowship training in adult hip and knee reconstruction at Baptist Health in Miami, Florida.

Dr. Burnikel’s clinical expertise includes primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty, with a particular interest in robotic, minimally invasive and muscle-sparing techniques such as the direct anterior approach for total hip replacement. His fellowship experience in Miami provided extensive exposure to advanced surgical techniques and complex revision cases.

Dr. Burnikel is passionate about helping patients regain mobility and return to the activities they love – whether that’s walking without pain, enjoying time with family or returning to recreational sports. He emphasizes a patient-centered, evidence-based approach that focuses on education, communication and individualized treatment planning to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Having grown up in Greenville, Dr. Burnikel is proud to return home and care for the community that helped shape him. Outside of medicine, he enjoys following Clemson athletics, golfing, spending time on the lake, and exploring the outdoors with his wife and two children.
