Dr. Horan loves Pediatric Orthopaedics! He feels he was destined to care of children and their injuries. While working on an engineering project in college in the early 1990's, he had the opportunity to work with a group of Pediatric Orthopaedists on a Motion Analysis project for children with cerebral palsy and found that this field was his calling. Although he had planned to be a Mechanical Engineer, he rerouted his education with his sights set on becoming a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. He graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and followed that with a graduate Master of Science degree in Bioengineering and Biomechanics, also from Clemson. He then worked as a Product Development Engineer for Stryker Spine in Allendale, New Jersey where he developed a Posterior Cervical Fixation System, OASYS, which resulted in multiple US Patents and has been used regularly throughout the world in thousands of patients over the past 20+ years. He next obtained his medical degree at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He completed his internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and completed a fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedics and Spinal Deformity at Columbia University in New York City.
Dr. Horan is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) , the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) , the Southern Orthopaedic Association (SOA), and the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association (SCOA) and a candidate with the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). Currently, he serves as a member of the Board of Counselors with the AAOS and travels to Capitol Hill to lobby for Orthopaedic Surgeons, reduced costs for patients, and timely access to medical care by reducing the hurdles to prior authorization. He serves on several committees with the above organizations including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Global Outreach Committee with POSNA and the SRS Nonoperative Treatment for Scoliosis Committee. He is a representative to the Board of Directors for the Southern Orthopaedic Association and is a member of the Board of Directors as well as the Orthopaedic Director for the nonprofit Medical Mission Ecuador Surgical Mission.
He serves as a clinical assistant professor with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and teaches medical students and residents Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. His research interests included peer reviewed published works on Vitamin D deficiency in Pediatric Orthopaedics as well as textbook chapters, journal articles, and speaking presentations on Pediatric Orthopaedics.
Since 2009, Dr. Horan has been a member of the Medical Mission Ecuador, traveling to Ambato Ecuador annually to provide free medical care and Orthopaedic Surgery to children in underserved areas. He now directs the Orthopaedic Surgery team for the mission and organizes the travel and planning for a 80 member team from the United States. This was our first visit since the registration and check in process was updated. Last visit was 3 weeks prior. We of course walked all the way to the suite for the appointment where we were then told we needed to go all the way back upfront to register and check-in. At that point I did see a sign. The signage at the main center desk was on a dry erase board and partly wiped off. There were three ladies at the desk, I'm surprised they are letting patients walk all the way in without at least speaking because we were not the only ones. The physician was great as always, super nice. Upon leaving, we did not notice a sign and was just directed straight out and again walked all the way to the front and had to come all the way back into the suite to check out. I will say the lady at the checkout desk in the suite was not the friendliest. I am familiar with the healthcare settings and do know that patients do not read signs however, better signage at the main entrance and not on a dry erase board could have been visually more appropriate. I'm sure the three registration ladies at the main entrance could be busy at times, but when they are not to maybe address patients when they walk in especially with the new process in place. Another suggestion would be to add a note in my chart to register at the main entrance desk. This may be a great idea to help the flow better for the facility, but seemed a bit confusing.

Provide some sort of information about financial assistance if insurance was not covering a great percentage of the bill.

I had a great experience at the ortho office. My only suggestion is our cast tech was on her phone the whole time from the time she came and got us to the time, like throughout casting his arm. She had it sitting on the table watching it and an ear plug-in and just wasn't fully kind of engaged in what we were doing and then seemed a little seemed a little aggravated with my son moving, which I mean is expected of a five-year-old. However, I think she could have been a little more engaged as well. So I work at Prisma Health. I know that we shouldn't have our phones out like that. So maybe just you could put the phone up while you're casting an arm. That's my only complaint. Other than that, great experience. Thank you.

This visit was awful, to the point we are switching to another provider. I would not recommend any parent and child to this type of establishment.

Dr. Horan is absolutely wonderful. He is patient and takes his time to answer all of our questions. We do not ever feel rushed or have any concerns with his care plan. We enjoy seeing him and his staff!

The casting staff was fabulous, but I didn't feel like they had looked at my son's x-ray, period. Also, it seemed like we should have just had an opportunity to very quickly touch base with the doctor, not just the casting staff.
